Banksia/Dryandra Sessilis - Parrot Bush

Post by Patmet »

This is a species trial I'm starting from nursery stock. It is a locally native, very abundant coastal plant in my area, south west Western Australia. It grows as a shrub or small tree, and the variety I am using has naturally very small leaves. Also flowers in the cooler months and has a smaller flower than most banksia. Great potential here I think.

No wire etc has been applied yet just repotted from nursery soil and light trim to get started.

The old parrot bush! We had 1000s of them where I grew up. Hopefully 1 won’t have that smell a whole bushland of them does 😝 really interested to see how this goes

Older thread, but wondering how its going?? I recently picked up an older pot grown parrot bush from the back of a nursery. Its repotted well and starting to flower now. Trunk is probably 5cm thick? And about 35-40cm tall

Well NikiC seeing as you have asked I may as well do an update on this one.

It's doing really well so far powering along nicely. I've recently up-potted it into a large grow pot to get some trunk girth happening. It's also starting to flower.

Right now this one is probably around 2cm thick in the trunk. Glad to see someone else having a go at this species. I think it has potential.

That's particularly interesting, with the small flowers and leaves! Does it bark up like a serrata when it gets thicker and older? Anyone over this side trialled it, and had it survive?

I think it does Gavin from what I've been able to find. Not quite as much as Serrata but I found an image of the trunk of an old specimen in WA looks like.
