(SELL) JBP Bunjin bonsai 40+ years old (MELB)

Post by TimS »

From time to time i rotate trees i'm no longer in love without of the collection and that's exactly the circumstance here.

This is a Japanese Black Pine and the history of it is as follows. It was grown from seed in the early 1980's (don't have an exact year) and then purchased approximately 10 years later from the guy who germinated it by the previous owner.

He had it from then and grew it as an almost hoizontal windswept style up until a few years ago when i purchased it from him after it had fallen by the wayside of his collection. I took it to Scott Martin of Bonsai Matsu who came up with this twin-apex bunjin style that you see it in now, and i have rewired it once since then (that's my crap wiring on there now not Scotts). It was repotted this year into a bigger pot to allow me to stand it more upright into the planned angle, so you see the pot is a on the larger size from what i would ordinarily keep it in.

It has beautiful natural shari up the trunk that could be extended if you were inclined, and the old bark you can't cheat your way to getting.

Really a lovely tree in an elegant bunjin style you don't often see, I just dont do a lot with pine, and i have another one I'm more attached to, so this one is up for sale now to hopefully find it a good home

Price is $700 but i'm open to reasonable offers.

Looks like a lovely tree Tim. Unfortunately probably beyond what I am willing to risk financially given my skills levels currently. Hope you find a buyer who can really value it, especially what seems to be the less common Bunjingi style

Totally understandable, i think it took me 2-3 years before i felt comfortable splashing a bit of dosh around on trees. As scary as the big and more expensive trees seem, i've always found them much easier to care for with a full time job than the small ones given the much less frequent watering needed. My biggest & oldest trees require far less attention than the younger stuff; and it's the maples that are the biggest pain in the bum i find!

Pines are super easy to take care of compared to deciduous; they are quite happy and actually prefer to be on the drier side and really just need attention 2-3x per year, especially once the core structure is set and the maintenance is just keeping the pads where you want them. This tree would be to be ready to go in a show in probably 3 years with the right techniques and maybe 5 with less attentive care.

Just at the moment a lot of people don't have the spare money laying around they used to, so she's still for sale. Or next year's BSV show it will find its way to if it doesn't sell before the :tu2:

This is a reality for sure. The smaller the trees, the more work they are. More vigilance required with watering, more pruning to maintain shape/repotting occurs more frequently ... the list goes on. That's not to say they should be avoided, I love little bonsai! Just that larger trees are less work in general and that may not be something that is apparent to people new(er) to bonsai.

Yes, even more difficult

Well, after all those re-assuring sales techniques, I might see if it is still around by the time my birthday comes around next year...

yes, it might be an irrational fear factor, but that also feels real...

I wouldn't say irrational, but I've lost count of the number of small trees I've lost due to not being able to be around to care for them (water) during summer days, and the only times I've lost bigger trees is when I've gone too hard at repotting time and i can only think of maybe 2 or 3 examples where I've done that.

It's why i pretty much only grow larger size trees now, and don't do anything smaller than shohin anymore. Anything small is being grown on to be big, because i just can't be around to grow the smaller stuff Ryan (ryceman) does despite how amazing his trees are.

If it's still around come your birthday and you're still keen, let me know and we can talk turkey on price :D
