This little maple, a 2 year ago cutting from my neighbour's tree, had lost its leaves end of January. Wasn't sure if it was hibernating early, or dead ... then noticed today it's shooting new leaves, is it autumn, spring or something else? Now more confused about this art than I was before!

Re: Autumn has Sprung?
Not sure the trees know what they should be doing right now! one of my JM's starting going dormant, dropped a bunch of leaves and is now happily growing new shoots againlegoman_iac wrote: ↑April 4th, 2025, 7:09 pm This little maple, a 2 year ago cutting from my neighbour's tree, had lost its leaves end of January. Re: Autumn has Sprung?
I have noticed this the last couple of summers on my Japanese maples also... I feel they give a final push of growth after the heat wave of summer has gone.....not sure what it means but interesting to note. Im from the western area of Sydney, relatively warm days still around here.

Re: Autumn has Sprung?
It will be interesting to see what that maple does over winter.
Some years ago I pruned quite late. The maples responded with a flush of new growth at the end of Autumn then kept those leaves all winter. Of course I was worried that might be detrimental but they all went back to normal the following Spring.
January to April is a long time to be without the solar system so I hope the tree is not too weak to make it through what Sydney calls 'Winter'
Hopefully it's still warm enough and the tree has enough strength to grow enough leaves to recharge reserves.
