Fig with lots of new growth. Trim????

Post by Andrew Farrent »

Hello to all,
I'm new to Bonsai and i have inherited a Moreton Bay fig that has been entirely ignored for around twenty years.
At this time, it has recovered from where it was to now having healthy growth, but with lots of shoots having sprouted on lower trunk.
Should these be removed or what should i do ??
Thanks in anticipation.

Most bonsai work is seasonal so, before we can give good advice, we need to know your location.
Ficus are definitely in the 'don't like cold' category. Someone in Brisbane might be OK with pruning Ficus now but, down here in cooler climes, I would definitely leave mine alone until late Spring.

It appears you have had a great response to pruning this one. Now it will be beneficial to leave all those new leaves to feed the tree. Anything you cut off cannot feed the tree. Leaving plenty of leaves for a while allows the tree to build strength for the next time you attack it.
For now, just plenty of fertiliser and enough water to keep the tree happy.

As those new shoots grow you can work out which you'd like to keep to develop branches and where you want the top of the tree to be.

Thanks for the reply ... very helpful.
I will follow the advice, and my location is Adelaide and our lowest temperature is nominally 10°C overnight.
I can house in an area that gets sunlight most of the day and is completely under cover.
Cheers Andrew.

Minimum 10C should be OK for Ficus. We get regular night temps below freezing here which can devastate them.
