Cork bark elm

Hi all,
I'm a bit confused. Is cork bark elm the same as english elm (has corky bark on young growth) or is it another species? Also,near here is a patch of elms that look like english elms but don't have the corky growth on young branches. Any idea what they might be?

There are a few cork bark elms none are of Ulmus procera the English elm. They are all hybrids from Ulmus parvifolia the Chinese elm.

Chinese elms get a cork or flaky bark as they get older. Subarosa is very corky as is Seiju looking at the elm that ray Nesci has bred that one has very corky bark also.

as pup said they are of chinese elm. the cork bark elm i have got ( i cant tell you which sub it is) i have had some great success with airlayering it. it has layered very easily i am about to take the top off very soon, within a week or so, it has only been on for no more than 8 weeks.

Do you think its safe to take off now, only 8 weeks. I thought my peach tree was ready and that was after 10 weeks, the roots were strong but & a week after planting it was dead.

mmmm cant be sure til i try, but the strength of the new root system should be alright, if and when i do take it of soon i will be very pedantic about the after care. plus being a chinese elm i think it should be alright, they are rampant growers as you know so i dont see it as an issue.
