First Port Jacson Fig Attempt

Hi all.
Thought I would show you all my first attempt at a shohin fig.
Any feed back good or bad would be great. They are a great tree! I have never really had a lot to do with them, but I am really starting to like them a lot
I will need to wire it as you can see.

Nice little tree bud. It's got a good, solid base and some good movement in the trunk. It's got some good branches to choose from as well.
Cut a couple of them off, wire a couple and it will be on it's way to a nice shohin =)

Hi,

I am not really sure what you plan for the biggest branch on top?

If you plan to keep it together with either or both the smaller (long) branches below,
then it would be good to think about how bring their thickness into proportion. The
longer you leave it, the harder it is to correct later on.

Small Port Jackson figs are as cute as little ducklings!

Definitely a nice base. I'd be cutting all the branches just a couple of centimetres from the trunk to keep them close in and in proportion to the trunk. The budding will extend the length. Nice little start for a smart shohin.

As MelaQuin has suggested they should all be cut back to start ramification. That thick you branch in the middle needs to come off altogether it is thicker than most branches below it which is not good.
It is also almost as thick as the trunk at that point.

It is 200mm from soil level to the top leaf. I do plan to cut the top part of the trunk back . Is it a good time of year to cut all the branches as well as the top part of the trunk?

definately a good buy, in fact a steal. heres one i did and this is kind where i can see yours goin. only thing its half the height. i recently too cut off all the branches and is now popping back. i will get an update photo for you some time today.

I have done some branch removal today
It looks a lot better than the first pics. I will post some pics tomorrow for you all too see. I have given it some fertiliser as well,so hopefully it will pull through the cut.

Hi,

Some of mine have been cut almost bare, but I do not do it all at once, I cut a few off first,
wait, until I see some new shoots, then I move to the next ones.

I feel safe doing it like that I do not know how others do it?

Like this Ant you may remember this tree.



I also bare rooted this guy and cut all roots back to stubs, like a big tapered
cutting El will verify that it is budding like crazy..

I don't suggest you try this, but figs are just so strong, especially if you can keep them warm. I have a hot house.

P.s I hate figs!

That was the raffle prize Ant.

I think it cam up well. I have grown a cuttig on for about 3 -4 years, bot 3" across now. They grow so quickly!

Well, here it is. The first step was the top branch. I cut it back to give a bit better taper as was suggested. Then I decided to cut back the branches. I went a bit crazy for some reason
I cut them all the way back, but left the two that are on the right. I am a bit worried about completely bare branching it.There are two small shoots at the rear of the tree and once they grow a little I will remove the two branches on the right. Hope I havent harmed my little friend?
