airlayer huge juniper

is this an ok time to be putting an airlayer on my large juniper im on the sunshine coast high humidity and about 33 deg latley but theres a cool change this week im thinking do it now and remove mid aut
whats your thoughts people

sounds like a great idea to me, the humidity should give you the milage you need to achieve that.

It would have been better in spring. As it takes about 4 months. That means we are heading for Autumn when trees put on a spurt to take them though winter.
Seeing as you do not have a winter so to speak it should be OK.
As with all tasks in Bonsai there are the optimum times, and spring is the best in MOST cases not all.
Just be aware that one hot dry! day can be hazardous.

with air layering a juniper should you expect some dehydration of the bark on the part being layered? on mine that i have recently put a layer on i have got some wrinkling of the bark yet it is still very green underneath, i know this cant still be a trait of a juniper that has died but i am unsure about the layer?

i am asking this as it is relevant to the thread instead of starting a new one. im not trying to hi jack it dayne

jamie no worries its not hy jacking. i as you love all the info i can get regarding this i think i might give it ago my last one was in spring but ididnt leave it long enough and lost it but im going to leave this till april may be but should i do all spagnum or mix in some soil and diatomite i know ant uses soil others use spagnum what would you think others what are your thoughts pup

Hi ya Dayne I have used both sphagnum, and clay and a mixture of both. All have worked so I cannot say which is better. The only thing is never let it dry out even for a short time.
I have have wrapped the poly wrap,clear plastic, in Black plastic to great affect. What this allows is for you to take it off and have a look with out disturbing the roots.
Clay was the choice of the people who first used air layers. The Chinese centuries ago. I hope this helps.

well its eight weeks on and i have a fair few roots in the pot allmost full so ill probly be removing next week or two pretty happy

gotta be happy with that dayne

can you tell us what medium you used? i used a full sphagnum mix which resulted in a failure, it stayed to moist and the bark had basically rotted out after so long when i realised it wasnt taking.

i used my normal yamadori mix well sifted debco mix mary river sand and diatomite equal of each allmost but this time mixed in a fair bit of spagnum finely choped

well good news cut the top of today and cut the pot off it was full of roots put it in a large pot of 1/3 diatomite 2/3 sifted debco mix watered well with auxinone so looks like it should survive its in the shade for next few weeks and see how it goes

well people the top is of and booming the bottom has had a initial style just some branch selection going for a literati and the top will get grown on for a year im pretty stoked it worked as it is big stock and cost a bit but got two trees out of it
