trident stump chop!

Post by Jamie »

here is a trident i got a while back, basically bought for the first three inches of height, the rest of it didnt have anything going for it, was just a mess, will all that foliage on top no matter how i tried to get cuttings to take they just wouldnt :? ahwell, it happens, so i decided to try an airlayer, checking it this afternoon it was developing the start or roots but i thought to myself i better check the top i am layering to see whats allive still, to my horror there was only approximatly 1 inch of trunk left alive, so of with its head, thats gone, this is what i have left, i did have a few new shoots above where i cut but the werent where i wanted them, this i wasnt to phased about, it should bud back all over the place now and i should be able to make a sweet little shohin tree :D

the chop has made some sweet taper and i am hoping that it doesnt get to much taller than this, just enough to build a new apex and that should be it :D

Jamie i think this has the potential to be a nice shohin some day, remove that longer right root end of winter and go from there. I think you cut it just at the right point and hopefully it pops in the right spots. Usually i wouldnt cut trident back that heavy this time of the year but i live further north than you. i do mine same time as root prune late winter here.

cheers pal and to right, i have it in a spot where it gets a nice amount of morning sun and then from 11 onwards its in the shade, the wind can be a prob though as we get hit with it from all directions all the time  similar prob as you, but we'll see how it goes, if i get some good strong growth then it stays and i will develop it, if it is going strong i think it will be finding a new home down south ;)

cheers.

Nice jamie
good to see people are not scared to prune back hard

Shoud pop out everywhere and then at the next repot lose the big root.
How big across the base? nothing to get a sense of size

ahhh size wise as of now after the chop, it is about 10cm tall, and about 4 cm across the trunk and the nebari spread is approximately 12.5cm :D

as for not being scard on the hard prune, i dunno about that, i tried to save the top with an airlayer... lol decided stuff it, it will make for a much better tree in the end, as for the roots there isnt to much work to do on it, i think the hardest part will be reducing the mass, but being a deciduous tree i am thinking it will be fine :D
