I'm inspired to do it out in the field saves a lot of energy particularly if your olives are far from the car.. especially after reading that Olives can sit for a month out of the ground after being chopped. Thanks Ozzy

Well, Ozzy we have 4 large feral olives on the property which should be removed, and beyond what I can do with a mattock, maybe we need you to visit after fire season.

this thread has inspired me so I called a friend who said they had a couple of big olive trees they didnt want, and today I paid them a visit and here is what I have, maybe thinking of something like this, any other suggestions?

the movement of each tree is from one another...

i'd like to see the big one stood up and make the others "further away"

or... make a cut or rip off the smaller two from the biggy and restyle the two seperately...

Ozzy, my husband isn't that keen on having strangers on the property, but we are quite interested in getting some megacuttings for ourselves. He says to tell you that he is partial to Crown Lager and that we have spare sleeping space if necessary We could make a barbecue out of it
There are also hundreds of young eucalypts, we are revegetating some areas, but they could do with thinning. May be a few Allocasurina seedlings usable, but we want to keep most of those growing. I just lifted a couple yesterday to see how they do.
Tell me what we will need in the way of potting mix, etc to try megacuttings, so that we can get prepared.
And rocks, we have a variety of ironstone which throws up the occasional wonderfully pitted or hollowed specimen, you are welcome to look.

In General, most people will cut straight through the Tuber to take advantage of the taper, but has anyone tried planting the cut-off top section of the tree that would normally be discarded? If so, do these "Megacuttings" strike just as well as the tuber?

Webos, megacuttings is the best word for them. I have studied horticulture, never believed this kind of thing was really possible, but I saw what Ozzy did on BonsaiTalk, now I am dead keen to learn. DH is more keen to produce $300 olives quickly and cheaply, as if he thinks I would sell something I have nurtured so long and so carefully...

Well maybe if I could do enough of them I might part with some.

Having been taught never to take anything more than 6" long or pencil thick, these fascinate me.
You posted while I was musing over my answer, yes, Ozzy did those as well, doesn't need to be the tuber.
