thuja from 6 foot to 6 inches

hey guys, here is a thuja occ. that got given to me, it was over 6 foot tall and i had no idea what to do with it, so out come the saw and it got smaller and smaller until i come out with this, all i got is a pic of as it is now, i seem to have lost the before pic, its just a matter of waiting and seeing if it survives.
time will tell

Nice one jamie. Sometime I wonder if you keep this rate, how are you gonna manage to transfer all the trees if you happen to decide and move down here

thanks guys lol it was massive and had nothin g going for it either, but it was free and i got sick of looking at it how it was lol. so this was the results, like i said i dont know if it will be able to handle the punishment but who knows, it could suprise me, i am quite happy with how the daed wood section come out, it looks quite natural

mate, if there is a will there is a way, and if the need arises i will build a trailer specifically just to move all my trees safely

i guess i should give exact dimensions, as you can see it is 6 inches tall which is 150mm approx. across the trunk at the base is just ove an inch and a half approx 35mm.

i keep getting the feeling of a tree that has been smashed down from severe weather when i look at this tree, hopefully it handles all the punishment it has received. like i said time will tell

oh by the way, the deadwood, even though you cant tell overly well due to the pic not being super clear (will get a better pic tomorrow) has all been done by fibre tearing, no dremels or nothin like that, just slivers taken bit by bit

well technically you could call it a literati, i dont know what other category it would fall in to?? and nah no chain saw, just a good ol' trusty pruning saw and some brute strength to pull the crap out of the left over stubs to create the grain in the dead wood sections

yea i am hoping so its in a training pot right now, i am leaving it in there until i see some new strong growth, then i will decide on pot, i am thinking drum pot with rivets???

any other ideas?? i think this tree is looking quite good from most angles ?

Hi Jamie, no offence, but I wish I could agree with everyone else, but I just cant. I dont even know what to think of it? Windswept upright driftwood literati? Even if you couldnt think of a style, you could have just left it stylistic natural and just refine the branches. Or just shorten it halfway and let it grow until an idea pops in. Anyway I hope you dont take offence as its just a personal opinion. But at least it sounds like you had fun and maybe that was the main thing for you.

no offence taken mate, honestly i didnt see anything going for this tree, it had branches all growing from the same point causing reverse taper, no foliage down low that was going to amount to anything, other than going into the ground as a yard tree i just decided i didnt have anything to lose.
in all honesty what is it that doesnt feel right to you? i find that all critisism good or bad will lead to something and i appreciate your honesty.

the whole point to why this was done was mainly practice on technique, specifically getting deadwood to look natural.

Cool jamie, Im glad you take it like that. My opinion is that its too short and rigid with little flow, especially with the almost 90 degree bend downwards. Even if you developed more bulk for the needle fans, it would look disproportionate for a shohin because of the shortness of the trunk, my opinion only. The thuja needle fans of your variety are difficult to direct into a convincing windswept fashion. Juniper would have been better. However with what you have now, It would look more in the future like a bunch of giant palm leaves bunched together. Also the driftwood doesnt look wind directed, infact its going the other way, it also looks like some blokes taken a sharpener and sharpened the top of the second trunk. Anyway, please dont loose any sleep on any of my opinion. I probably would make a raft style forest from your tree, but again my opinion only. When I get a new camera and take pics of my trees, feel free to criticise and dont hold back cause being nice will not improve me.
