Demo Eucalyptus

The first photo was the result of a demo (first and last) done at the 2007 Australian Plants as Bonsai Show.

The second, a year later.

The third is current. I reduced the root ball considerably to be able to fit my new Pat Kennedy Pot.

It survived and is slowly on the mend.

A truly lovely tree Peter, thank you for sharing it.
It's progressed very nicely and I can see you are working on getting those typical Eucalyptus pads to form. I'm looking forwards to seeing how it looks after the next 12 months!

A few questions if I may...
Is it a Nicholii?
How tall is it?
Was it nursery stock or collected?
Are you concerned about getting it out of the bagpot when you next repot? It's a lovely Mirkwood pot and I think I would be a little worried myself.

You say this tree is the result of a demo at APAB 2007? Must have been on the Sunday, as I was there on the Saturday and would have been certain not to miss your demo. You say 'first and last' - why is this?

Anyway, this is becoming a truly well-structured tree! (I find the new pot a little small, but I've always erred on the side of overpotting.)

Steven as it has to have the roots reduced when re potting.
I have never found Bag pots to be a problem. You just need a very sharp knife or sickle.
Peter I would like to know the answers to the other questions though.

Yes it was the Sunday afternoon one. I was extremely nervious and found it hard to concentrate. I didn't find it a pleasent experience.

As for the pot being to small ( maybe). I think it helps show off the rough bark and the trunk line common of a lot of Euc's. I also love the colour and texture of the pot.It go well with the bark.
My concern will be protecting the roots from the frosts this year. Currently I am using heshon on top of the soil to cut down on evaporation. I wil use the heshon in winter to wrap around the pot to protect the new roots.

Great Tree Peter! I have to say I like the tree pot combination.

Do you mind me asking if the tree came from a bonsai nursery or a regular nursery around Canberra?

Since seeing your trees I have been very interested in getting a E. nicholii just to learn how to treat them.

This was a stock tree in a 4" pot from a regular nursery in around 2000.

I agree with all three of these comments. its looking like a tree i would see on the drive through the mallee. I like it.
i do also agree a great deal that the pot does apear too small, and it makes things look unbalanced.

I agree with the balance problem so I had another look and adjusted a few things. also I photographed it at a different angle.

Gday Hugh et al!

Having seen this tree in person at the 7th National Native Bonsai Show, I can say that it is progressing in leaps and bounds! I retract my previous comments about the pot appearing too small, as Peter has removed a branch or two and found a better balance.

I look forward to more updates on this great little tree!

This is a stunning tree. I thought the original looked good. Removing those branches on the left has really improved the shape and it looks more balanced in the PK pot. It's amazing how removing just one branch can improve an already good looking tree. I am still not convinced about the size of the pot. Whilst it certainly has a good look, I am concerned that it might topple over in windy conditions.
