queensland small leaf fig

Post by jarryd »

i found this queensland fig about 6 months ago as a two metre tall overgrown garden tree in a platic tub at my mates house growing in his mums overgrown jungle of a garden, i loved its trunk with its winding aerial roots running down the trunk.

i chopped this tree right back to about one quarter of its height and potted it into a styro box. yesterday i pulled it out of the greenhouse in a once again overgrown state.

this first image shows it as it came out of the greenhouse.

my vision was to style this tree as a rainforest style strangler fig that had won its battle with the host tree and now stood victorious tall above the forrest canopy its trunk now completely engulfing the host tree
this next image shows the tree after it was defoliated and received its first styling removing un wnated branches and roots and a complete wiring and shaping.

there was something not quite right about this first image there was a thick yet ramrod straight leader that was a real eye poker, turning the tree about 30 degrees anticlockwise also revealed a better front. the leader was then carved right back to make it bendable and allow use of its lower right branch. the lower secondary leader was then wired up to create the new leader and minor adjustments were also made to several other branches, this tree i find now really reveals its beauty

the tree now stands between 60-70cm tall, a general sized branch cutter for reference

i hope you have enjoyed this trees progression as much as i have so far
cheers jarryd

Dude, that looks great!! Nice work! When the braches thicken up and you get some ramification, it will be an excellent tree!! Love the trunk and aerial roots ^_^

G'day mate. I can see the vision you have for your tree. I think the tree looks like it might actually be a Baby Ben fig. Have done a virt on the tree to give you another option on styling. Not really experienced at combining trees and pots in a virt, but Jamie is good at that so might be able to have a go for you :?: cheers Rod
