Yeah, it's a heavy tree mate. Glad to be of assistance when ever you go digging again!

Re: COLLECTED RADIATA
I plan on cutting one of these back in late winter. The other I want to use all of the tree. It's a beautiful formal upright. The lower branches will be used to fatten the base more.

Re: COLLECTED RADIATA
yeah right
coz i was just wondering how you'd go about do it
The trees dug out, it's growing roots it's alive and doing well. Which is all pretty full on traumatic but it survived
so should pruning be treated with some caution?

Re: COLLECTED RADIATA
I have no intention of pruning anything in the 1st 12 mnths. In the 2nd yr i plan to reduce the crown on top to transfer energy to the lower tree which will actually be the bonsai. Following that, in the third i hope to eliminate the top and have the actual tree growing strong and begin the energy balancing within. once this period of 3 yrs is up. If all has gone well, I should have a grow box full of roots, strong enough to now handle its first styling, followed by a repot in the 4th year. Unless the tree achieve's all this it wont stand up to a major bend and racking session. Sure you can prune now and do a little styling next year and possibly even light bending. But come to eventually sorting the roots with a repot or a heavy styling, you better make sure its up for it.These are my plans for now and my advice to who wants it.

Re: COLLECTED RADIATA
Yeah I agree with you however I will try to push growth lower on one of mine earlier. No styling just a heavy prune.

Re: COLLECTED RADIATA
All good mate, you have to find your own path and limits. But if theres not enough growth on top between prunings then there is not enough roots in the box, to make for a stronger healthier tree later.

Re: COLLECTED RADIATA
Mine's fine as well Ant. Root ball was left in tact, immediate soak in plant starter and seasol in full shade, a little defoliation and it's pushing up fresh green tips.
I really do wish they'd hurry up and grow.
