Advise needed on Shimpaku

Hi guys,

I recently styled this tree and thought I'd post it to see what you guys think of it. I'd really like some carving advise on the dead wood. Should I leave them, shorten it, take some or all of them. Let me know.

great work mario, i think you have nailed the foliage like a pro the deadwood will come with a bit more refinement, think very carefully about what you shorten, it is easy to take off but hard to put back on, do a little at a time, step back look over it see if it fits in your visualised image, even before doing that get the sketch pad out and draw out some sketches to see what the tree would look like with shorter jin stubs, or whether it would look good with twisted carving etc.

with deadwood you want to try make it look as natural as possible, taking fine slithers of wood off may be time consuming but well worth the finished effect

I think you have done a fine job on your juni , if it were mine I would shorten the jins. Mate a technique I use for refining my dead wood is a wire brush on a power tool . The brush removes the soft wood leaving the harder wood- always go with the grain. Here`s a virt to show what I`m thinking. Cheers Rod..

I agree about shortening the jins... they are too dominant for the tree but very interesting in a more abbreviated form. It will develop into a very nice tree.

Thanks for your reply and suggestions. I will be shortening that top jin and the rest. Love the virtual Rod its exactly how I pictured the crown once its fills out. Will be applying your suggestions this weekend and will post some more photos as soon as I can.
