Nice treatment of this material: some nice, subtle movement and the beginnings of good taper. I tend to agree with MelaQuin about the upper bending, as it is a little too severe for the rest of the trunk (unless of course you could make more of those lower bends... ).

Thanks Fri. I put extra movement in the top for now because I have a feeling that when it a lot of that will be cut back.

Yeah, looking at the first pic you put up again, you could probably do with cutting the top off to that first branch down and styling it into the apex??

But all options will present themselves after a good growth spurt.

G,day Jarrod If this were my tree and seeing as how they a fast growers. I would be more drastic I would chop the top to the 4th branch. That way you get rid of the snake and you bring the tree to shohin without all the bends. I would plant the top, so you have another starting.

Thanks pup. Yeah I agree it probably could get cut at the point you suggested however I might let it grow strongly for a year (if it survives) and then think about the next step with this little fellow. And the pot is nice huh

This little guy is sitting still. Not sooking but just waiting. No leaves have browned off and it looks like the buds left on the end of branches are thinking of moving. Hope it pulls through!

I normally wouldn't be either but I took off over 85% of the roots!

I think it'll pull through fine just take a little longer then normal.

I've given a few young mels similar root treatment Jarrod and they pulled out fine. As long as you rid it of a great deal of foliage and put it in the shade for a while they seem to bounce back.

Checked it again this arvo, and success, buds are starting to form!

Now to let it fill out!

Another update, buds are opening, atleast one on every branch.



And when I took it out of the holding pot, some roots were forming on the base of te trunk that was submerged. A very healthy little tree

Looking good Jarrod. I think the curving is good as the tree ages the curves will soften. I am assuming you are still planning to shorten it a bit ?

I probably will shorten it Craig but I am just going to let it grow for a while. Need to re assess it next year when it has filled out some. The pinching will start in about a month
