swampy air layer

i have found a huge swampy here on the coast and am thinking of climbing up and air layering the top off about 120mm in diamiter has any one had any sucsess with this or know a time frame i know shannon just flat bottoms them but my thinking is may be a air layer could be good as hes got a few years exp up his sleeve well only about 15 on me

I have one I am trying to airlayer - it has been going for about 3 months and nothing so far. I am using the same method as I use for figs, so I don't know if they are really slow or I need to change my method. Hopefully someone will steer us clear.

G`day Dayne, mate I don`t know how large a swampie you want . I can pm you the number of a guy up my way that still has some large swampies in the ground. They are very cheap, but you have to get them out yourself. I have helped others get some, here are some pics of the last two that came out . I can see these being great trees with some carving, the only down side for me is they are huge. CHEERS ROD.............

id also like to know if anyone has been successful with airlayering a swampy

, i picked one up from the bonsai nursery at caringbah few months ago and have been meaning to have a go at airlayering the top of it

i could also grow it out and make a nice shari out of it when it thickens

i reckon using a medium that is absolutely soaked would work well for an airlayer, something that will hold a lot of moisture, shpagnum and maybe some zeolite. zeolite holds water really well, and as long as the layer is keep wet you should be good, they strike from cuttings just in water so i cant see why they wouldnt strike from airlayer.

does it have any low branches dayne?

i do a sphagnum moss rap( a ball of sphagnum rapped in cling rap, tapped on directly above the incisions and about an 50mm below) on my ficus and it seems to work wonders i might give it a go on my swampy. one downside is if you leave it to long it can get moldy and the roots may be difficult to separate from the moss

I've air-layered a few and they're pretty easy to do - I find Spring is best.
