JBP seems to be the consus of things, so now i need to find one

Hi Jamie,

Slash Pine is a good way to go, Pinus elliottii. It does well north of Brisbane and I have seen one absolute knock tree in Sydney that is Slash Pine. Big trunk and beautiful branches.It was a bit yellow but that can be due to lack of ferts.

Black pine is good for your local as well, Mexican seems to do OK in most places.

Some of the Mediteranean pines may do OK but for instance Pinus halipensis, Alleppo or LONE pine hates the humidity, but thrives in Hay in the desert.

Forget Scots, Mugo, Jack,Japanese Five Needle Pine.

Steve at bonsai grower is the guy for timing and such he's got some killers as for stock he has some at about $30-$70 $120 and $650 but their about 25 yrs down the back red dragon has some inbetween for about $350 may be leong he has heaps but I think d stock is better as it's climatized

yea thats my other thoughts on trying to acclimatise the tree it may take a little while. im hoping noah pokes up somewhere as he has bought trees from down south and gotten them acclimatised in rocky.

i would be looking round 150-200. somewhere round there. depending on the tree i will be happy to go more but would need to be able to pay it off.

I have a JBP here in Mackay that is growing well. I bought it from Bunnings as a small seedling ($5) about 9 months ago, and it hasn't looked back.

Not the greatest photo, but what I had an hand. It base is now about as thick as my little finger (I have slender, piano-players hands) butwas probably only about 5mm across when I got it. I just let it grow, not too much water. Haven't sorted out the 'candle' part of maintenance yet.....

Bonsais are on the back burner for a while. Have suspected scaphoid (wrist) fracture and could be in plaster for 3 - 6 months, right hand too!

All my pines either came from south of sydney and some melbourne. I found some struggled the first year but adapted and showd good growth the second and beyond. You will find since you have a longer growing season technique and timing will be different to those in sydney etc

In rockhampton with an average summer temp of 32 degrees and a nice humidity of 60% plus for 5 months of the year i have only grown various cultivers of JBP and JRP

thse include
naskiki black pine
yatsubushi corkbark black pine (i only have one a semicascade about 20 years old (going into a bonsai pot first time this repot)
yatsubushi (drawf) black pine
milwaki black pine
Japanese red pine
Varigated red pine (i sold it as an offer to good wish i didnt now)

i found the japanese red pine to be aliitle touchy with the humidity, the dwarf black pines are the way to go, the variety LOW GLOW which is a dwarf red is ok just have to find a good one as they are grafted can bulge and growth habit is it forms multiple branches at one point which will lead to inverse taper if not removed early. For shohin these are great if you cant grow mugos etc.

if you find a nice yatsubushi black pine grab it , it will keep you busy as they will form 8 or more buds at each candle site and you have to remove most . if you have the time they can be rewarding. They will do well up your way. Hope this helps
