[Wanted] Hawthorn stump or pre-bonsai

Just wondering if anyone has a decent hawthorn stump or pre-bonsai for sale?

you might find it is a bit hard to keep a hawthorne up here mate, they do like a cold spell, although it seems the further south you go in QLD the better you can grow trees that like a cold snap like tridents and the sorts. it will be interesting if you can find one and how it goes i would be interested in trying one too

Jamie. That's just a myth. My uncle has two young ones (one pink flowers and the other white flowers) that he grows as garden trees and wouldn't let me have one I didn't know he had them until a couple days ago when I chatted to him. Anyway, they both have urgly shapes for bonsai. My point is they do grow here. Winter is often not too cold here but can get to 5 degree celcius. Ipswhich, where I work, can get to negative 5 at nights. I recond they do evolve and adapt to suit the new environment. Just like some people said we can't grow crabapples here. I bought one tree and it flowered and fruited like crazy. I even air-layered it and the new tree takes roots and doing well now. I am fancying a Hawthorn!

i do agree that trees can evolve to suit invirontments, and i guess hawthorne could adapt just aswell, they are tough, i think the temperature that you get down to is cool enough for them to have a dormancy. i think thats why i have trouble up here is not only it doesnt get cool enough but i beleive humidty can be a prob to. it might be something else though, every time i defoliated a maple it just wouldnt come back and leaf out then it would eventually die.

let me know how they go with pot culture though if you get one, i will be very interested !

The japanese and trident maples are doing fine for me here. Just my taiwanese (hard leaf maple) just decided to drop all leaves. Handon, are we into Autum yet? Is it what it suppose to do?

yes mate thats what it is supposed to do you will also notice some of your other deciduos trees will also drop leaves, mayne not all of them but some will, some might only even patially drop there leaves.

I've never been good with time keeping let alone seasons The only two decidous trees that started to shed leaves are the taiwainese maple and the English Oak. My japanese maples and trident maples are still very green. That was why I didn't realise Autum already came. For me I kept it simple: Wet and Dry seasons

Hey DK, can't help with the Hawthorn stump my friend, but I would like to comment about Crabapples. I'm not sure who would have said they don't gow here, because I know of ALOT of great oens. And I was told by a very trustworthy source that they are "Qld's cherry blossoms", as in the grow beautiful pink to white flowers, but we can't grow prunus here very well.
I've onyl got one very small crabapple, but I'm on the hunt for a couple of decent sized ones!!

I don't know where he got them from but for 2 years old seedlings, they are very small and do not have a lot of branches to layer without affecting his tree. I'm not sure but the one with pink flowers type could have come from Northside Nursery. I will try to track it down and if I have some jamie. I'll keep you in the loop mate
