Re: Wollemi as bonsai?
Have got 2 wollemi - both as bonsai..
.. first was a 2ft plant i got when they were first released .. cant remember if i paid 30 or 50 for it..
it is now (3yrs i think) on and its about 5 1/2 ft tall in a 10l pot . Great tree .. but can really only be in 'upright'/'straight' style.
.. the second was a layer i took off the first.. as i was going straight i thought i may as well try and layer off the single lateral lower branch.
Took a while to root, but success, and i now have my 2nd wollemi (that is only 8 inches high) and surviving well !!
will try and get some photos up..

Re: Wollemi as bonsai?
Pbr means you cant propagate and sell the plant, the idea is to make sure that the initial breeder gets full profit from his/her invention for the first ten years. You can propagate it for your own use, as far as I know. The extra price and profit from the sale of Wollemis is going into research and preservation of parks or something, I think the propagation was done by a Govt dept. This is why they are so expensive.
Good luck to them and if i had enormous amounts of money to spend on plants and was sure I could keep a Wollemi alive I would buy one and support their effort. But I would have it in the ground, there are plenty of other trees which make better, finer leaved Bonsai. Im just a beginner, havent even begun to play with many species I want to try, tho, maybe it looks different to those who have tried everything.
Interesting to see what people can do with them tho.

Re: Wollemi as bonsai?
Out of curiosity... say you buy a wollemi, then turn it into a bonsai an sell it, is that legal? Or even, is it legal to re-sell as it was when you bought it? If so, how can they police something like that? I mean, they couldn't know in that case if you were selling the original, or selling one you propagated from the original...

Not totally sure, the breeder has certainly had his cut once from the plant, presumably you could resell it without him getting a second cut. After all, thats what plant retailers do. But not propagate and sell, unless you are licenced for the plant. If you were doing it on any biggish scale, people in the industry would notice pretty quickly.
Mpst of my propagation is Medieval herbs, they have been out of copyright since King Arthur wore short pants, so no problems there.

Wish that applied to CDs. You are not even allowed to copy your own perfectly-legal CD so you can use the copy in your car stereo or as a backup against scratching the original (of course it doesn't stop anyone do either of those thingskcpoole wrote:...I would it is the same as any other goods or asset. As I understand the Aus copyright laws we are allowed to make a Personal backup of Music and movies, buy Must be on the same format as the original. Ie you cannot rip music to an MP3 player

Re: Wollemi as bonsai?

Just wanted to know of any results that you may have had with the Wollemi tests Grant?
I recieved one as a xmas pressie when they first came out - $55 for an 8" pot. Its now taller than me - 2+ metres and the trunk has thickened nicely and has started to bubble

Was thinking of bonsaiing it into a bigger sized tree, but was interested if anything came of those tests?!!
Thanks
Andrew

Re: Wollemi as bonsai?
Also, Thor Beowulf from Bonsai Exotique in Sydney made a Wollemi into a larger bonsai. He bought one at the initial auction of them in 2005.
Does anyone know how the tree coped/survived? Does it look ok today - if it survived?
