Hi Hugh,
It looks much better without the aerial root.
I would leave the lower RH branch for the time being. Perhaps wait until you get some filling out of the leaves and see if you get a free branch bud developing up higher.
For the time being it fills the void which would otherwise be created.

that looks a heap better without the airial root mate im still unsure about the lower branch, but as steve has stated it fills a void, but this tree is still in a training pot so i am not sure that is to much of a concern, i would leave it though for a sacrifce branch to help thicken the trunk and induce a little more taper.

heres an update on the tree

i went to a work shop with Tony bebb last weekend and got some pointers on my privit and styling help.
i fixed the tree up a little a bit of trimming and rewiring and alot of leaf removal which greatly improved the overall image of the tree

the wire on the bottom branch indicates where im growing the branch out to, i will grow it out and let the tree fill out so its canopy extends all the way aroung to this point.
i plan on repotting it next weekend into a bonsai pot so i will post when im finished. ill try and get a virt going aswell to show the how i plan on finishing its styling

Well Done!! Root removal improved tree 100%. Now you see the trunk and not that root. Leave the lower branch - I think it is going to be very good. I would like to see the branches on the main trunk wired down a bit. Try the finger touch first and see what you think. It's hard to go past advice from Tony Bebb as he is tops but I still get the feeling I would like to see the branches lower.

Watch your apex... it is starting to develop double from the photo. But you have done good work and you will be very pleased with a season's growth. I'd say oval pot when it comes to that stage.

the root being removed did improve the tree a heap didnt it, only thing now is there is a pretty big scar but not to worry too much you cant see it from the front anyway.

Leave the lower branch

i deffinetally will leave the lowest branch as i now have a good plan for and i think it will be a main point in the trees design.
im not sure about lowering the branches i think there good where they are but... ill have a look as it might help but.

I'd say oval pot when it comes to that stage.

thats what i planned, im going to put it in a shallow blue oval pot, i think privits with there bright green foliage looks great with privit

Thanks Chris and Ant, I'm happy wiu how's it's going aswell it deffinetally has improved from only a few months ago. I'm hopig by this time next year it will have filled out and have more branching and ramifications going.
I'm really excited about this tree it's actually my fav at the moment.

looking very good mate, if you havent yet go over to bonsai4me.com and check out harry's privet progression, we have a longer growing season over here so you will get a faster growth and ramification then over there. i reckon this time next year you will have a nice tree and then two years it will be sweet!

Thanks Jamie I have checked out bonsai4me and looked at the privit progressions many times. He makes some awsome trees out of them, that's actually what inspired me mostly to give privit a go. When I saw people who had privit bonsai I thought "there allright but not great", and then I saw the trees on bonsai4me and it inspired me to give em a go And do as well as he did. And it's going all good at the moment.
I'm pretty sure like you say in 2 years it should be just right considering the amount they grow.
