First time i have had a look at this Jamie dont know how i missed it. Nice trunk, if i would change anything it would be the right hand trunks leader, it appears way to close to the middle trunk line. It needs to sweep away a little bit. It will be a beauty though.

i can see what you mean now, that is very acheivable to do aswell and it will create a bit more movement and character thanks for the tip, the next pic will have it done

UPDATE

got a better pic today, i will let it grow out of shape from here to give myself more options so no more updates on this one for the comp. a couple of months and it will be a bush. i am really gonna try hard to get the padded look i knoow i may be fighting a very hard battle with that but i am gonna try!

the left side trunk still needs a lot of development but we are getting there, the rest is going pretty well. once the main branches harden right of and i get the secondaries going, which is happening now i will have a very twiggy tree

well it looks like there will be a couple of update shots on this one before the deadline to get the pics in!
this clero has boomed, i would have to say this is one of the fastest growing trees i have seen.

Hi Jamie, Your tree is beautiful and knowing how Cleros grow it will just continue to get better in your hands I'm sure. I don't want to sound like a 'spoil sport' but from research I have done I don't believe that a Clerodendrum is a native. I have a couple of books on 'Trees of the World" and both claim it to originally be a native from Asia and Africa. I haven't heard of c. inerme and I well could be wrong. They seed readily and there are many of them growing wild in Queensland but as birds carry the seeds and they love our climate I would imagine they have grown a bit like privets do.

i have done research on it aswell and had others confirm that C.inerme is a native just not endemic to Australia. i had the same concerns before i entered the tree but had it cleared by the staff at AB.c aswell

Hi Jamie, thank you for your advice, I have learned something new today, now I don't know what mine are, some were collected from up your way and the others were purchased from nursery wholesalers. Mine are the same as the one Rod won first prize with at the Brisbane convention last May. Do you know that one, and if so is that c.inerme. Your help is appreciated.

i got this one and the one i have that is going on a rock off Rod in the middle of january, i am pretty sure they are all the same that were collected. i have also seen the ones in the nurseries and they are the same as these two i have, and Rod has aswell. the are very good trees to work with!

the clero are my favourite species to work with and was a delight to find that they were a native aswell, knowing that my favourite trees are native was a very nice thing to find out

Jamie why do you say it will be hard to get good pads on this? From the way it grows & shoots back I think as long as you stay on top of it with continual pinching back it should fill into nice thick pads with time.

its interesting you bring this up matty, i beleive it will be possible to get pads on this tree in due time, before i went away i thinned it out some to allow for it to grow into some pad like structure and it is doing just that. it will get there it is just a matter of time, i beleive once i got things hardening off and secondary branching which is happening it will create some nice structure and the tree will fill out, i have been ontop of the apexes lately as to push the growth low, it is nearly time to allow them to fill out and create a canopy in the apex too

i like where it is going aswell, i have had people say to cut one trun lower, to cut all trunks lower etc, i think that how it is will work in the long run

Thanks Jamie, yes I got a couple of mine from Rod too. I enjoy working with them as well and have a couple I might put in the competition. They aren't as good as Rod's big one, but they are on their way......a long way to go! Cheers Mate Carole

i dont think these are anywhere near as good as Rods.... yet since meeting Rod and seeing his collection he has giving me a level to strive for and i have been working on that nearly every day since then. it all takes time, and we will get there one day
