kvan64 wrote:Thanks Jamie, didn't see yr post. I found it difficult to wire with the leaves in the way. I pinched the new growth to keep the internods short but this promotes too much side branching. I have very litle experience in prunning fast growing plants. Do you suggest any resource to consult?
i will have to get back to you with the resources.

otherwise just work over it once a week, the wiring is there to help with you get shape you want in leaders branching etc, as you have stated the oak has extremely hard wood and wont like it later  :D
pinching back is fine but as you have said it is creating side branching. do you want or need this yet???
from what i can see you want a leader for trunk line so you can cut back later to creat the taper. and you want to choose main branching.
for now i wouldnt stress bout the internodes because like i said it is a growth stage more than a definition stage.

its good that with pinching you are getting side shoots, this means you will get ramification fast :D but that is after all the above is sorted :D

bit of chop, grow, chop, grow mate.
SHOHIN YAKUZA!!!
 taking the top half of trees of since 2005!
and growing trees for the future generations! 50+ year plans :D

Hey Kvan

Coming along nicely
If you defoliate they leaves will reduce, but unless you have to for some reason do not remove them while the tree is growing on.

When you are "finished" the basic design, and are ready for the tree to move into maintenanace mode them youca worry about leaf size.
Remove leaves will not help ramification, but cutting back the shoots to only 2 leaves will

Take off the branch back to 2 nodes, then wait till they grow again to 4- 6 leaves, then repeat. you can possibly do this 3 - 4 timeas a year in Sydney

I'd really cut it back to one trunk, a bit of new jin and one leader.

Mel, I've been considering your suggestion but can't decide which branch to cut.

From the pic you have attached, I wouldn't cut any thing. I would be working more on ramification.

I think that it's current state is more how mature Oaks grow in nature.

You're doing a great job with this tree!

Scott.

G'day kvan Thought I'd throw my hat in the ring on this oak. If this were my tree I would be looking for an uncluttered trunk line and bite the bullet by eliminating certain aspects. I would remove all traces of the second trunk ( you might get a nice shoot as a reward in its place) The jin would also go as it does seem out of place on a Decid. tree.
