Formal display- virtual experimenting.

Our yearly agricultural show is coming up so we had a demonstration and talk on formal displays this Saturday.

There is still a month left before the show so Im playing around with a formal display. I've got a lot of prebonsai but only two bonsai so I have decided to use my Buxus. The displays you see are virtual.

I rather like the color blue so I decided to go with a blue background representing our blue skies and a scroll with a Tree aloe and mountains. For an accent plant Im going to use something with small flowers.

What do you think of this display?

I like option A Lennard as the tree is leaning into the space. Very nicely set up simplicity is the key to these displays. How do you have such healthy hostas at this time of year ? mine are all on the way down now.

The other thing is that the display is too balanced. Move the scroll marginally toward the tree and it will look better I believe. Nice work.

Hi Lennard, this looks fun- have you got that exact shaped display alcove?
I like to exagerate assymetry in displays so I would tinker with the placements until the assymetry was more obvious. Scroll closer to tree (but not fully behind it), companion further away etc. You have three plants in the display- your bonsai, an Aloe and a Hosta. I think that removing one plant and relacing it with something more earthy may evoke the mountains more. I like the Aloe picture because it is most specific to the local view in mind so perhaps bonsai, aloe and a stone?

i would go with A, but two things i would change. the scroll and the accent, as its been said you have 3 plants but heres my take on it, the scroll needs to be a little less in the sense i wouldnt use plants or anything on the scrol i would look at a scrool that insites nature of the seasons, whichever you choose that suits the tree and the feeling of the setting, as for the accent i would look at maybe a suiseki, something that wont take away from the tree, or the overall setting, think small.

Option A looks better.
The main tree is planted incorrectly.
It is leaning left and planted left.
Any display will always look unbalanced if the main tree is potted wrong.
I like the high potted position, but there is too much moss.
Keep up the good work.

Thanks for all the replies.

This is a virtual formal display, the only thing that I do have is the tree and the determination to do this setting at our show- that's why the hosta is blooming out of season, Graig. If the flowering part of the accent is a problem I can go with a rock, piece of driftwood or a miniature aloe.

I have moved the table to the left, another 'lighter scroll with a mountain stream and I have also moved the accent to the left.

I agree on the tree to be moved to the left in the pot (I will do that in spring but if I want to participate in the show I have to live with it for now) and I can remove some moss.

If you are using the Tokonoma as part of your display drop the blue. It should be the same colour as the walls. Use the blue on the floor. If the tree and the Hostas grow in the same region then fine. If not find some thing that does, the elements should, not repeat themselves IE the hosta is flowering so is the aloe. The tree is growing on the plains so a small weed would suit. The scroll needs to be 2-4 cms of centre.

The scroll needs to represent part of the scene if you have one with birds flying see if you can point them towards the tree.

When looking at the overall scene, make sure you have a scalene triangle. Using the Tokonoma wall and floor as part of the triangle.

Lennard please do not forget, that the accent must have at least slab of something under it to separate it from the surface. The accent is also to far to the left.

here you go Lennard,

it is some good experience to try and set up a tokonoma, it was a very good lesson for me when i went through it with pup, as picky as somethings can be with it, to get them right works a lot better, and i know how hard it is to put a virtual setting up, it does take time and patiences for sure, just as much as doing one for real.

here is the setting that i finally get better (i will say better as that is what pup said ) and more accepted to having things right. it took three or four goes to get things sorted. hope it helps!
