Right time to airlayer?

Post by Krusty »

I have been given the opportunity to air layer a friends giant callistmon tree but i want to be sure i don't stuff it up. I have read up on how to do the actual air layer and have all the stuff required to do it, but i'm not sure if its the right time of year to do it. It's starting to turn wintery in Melbourne and so i was wondering if cold weather effects an airlayer. If so when would be the best time of the year to do it?

Also, does the thickness of the branch effect the success rate of the airlayer? The branch in question is about 3-4 inches thick.

G'day Krusty, the thickness will not be a problem but i would hold off until late spring/early summer. Having said that i have just applied an airlayer to a sugar gum so i will see how that goes. There is a wealth of info on aerial layering on this site and i remember a good example by Melaquin, Just troll through the postings and you will find it. Or maybe somebody more astute with computers will pull up the heading for you :D

The tree in question is about 30 years old and is in the front garden in the ground.

Bodhi's advice is sound. If you can, wait until late spring.
