Jamie,
Yes, I cut them back hard, beyond the green growth. They were a scrappy mob that had withered in the shade of some zelkovas that I allowed to grow high. They had a few new green shoots on the trunk.
A few of them prospered. A couple perished.
I wouldn't recommend it to those who are not prepared to fail.
Every thing has an exception.

Gday Dumper & Co!

While I agree to a point that your #1 front has some merit, it was not until Jamie made a Virt that I realised what it was that bothered me about this angle. You say that you can see Sonic The Hedgehog in your initial photo (so can I), but I reckon there's another pop culture icon lurking in your #1 front...

No offence intended, but I think #2 is looking more promising. ;) It may well be the results of photography, but that cleft and first bend seems a little too 'in your face' to me.

to be honest. when i put it on a turn table. and turn it around. all look good. #1 has reverse taper i know. #2 like you point out look like bart!!! hahahaha

i actually think even though front one might have a bit of a moony happening it will work better, i am sure playing with some different veiwing positions it will all present it self.
