I'm looking at thread grafting a trident late winter/early spring so after any info that might make the job go smoothly and have read the preceeding thread with interest.
I'm interested in thread grafting for the roots. I've grown a cutting from the tree that I hope to graft, to provide a set of roots for a bare side on the parent plant. The cutting has taken well and is a couple of years old now so this root pruning season is my chance to sort out this bare section problem.
Should I cut away part of the the bark on part of the lower trunk of the thread plant, so that the cabmium layers will be in contact, to encourage the two plants to graft/fuse?
Do threaded branches behave the same as regular branches? While I am trying this for the roots, I'm also considering if I will keep the branch as well.

Hi Jan
Have you checked out bonsai4me in the UK ? Harry has some very interesting articles with pics on both thread and approach grafting roots.

Check with Ric. He is the aussie master at root grafting trident maple. He performed some at Bonsai By the Harbour.
