Where to dig in and around Perth?

Hi All,
Fairly new around here but since discovering it I've been checking it out on a daily basis to get ideas on increasing my stocks. I've got a few propagations on the go but would also like to get some established "fattys" to develop. Species isn't important, but i'm partial to the conifers and standard deciduous trees (elms, maples etc).

so my question is, having never collected yamadori before, where to look? I don't want to be breaking any laws but is there a general technique for finding good (free) stumps in the ground?

With the ever increasing development around Perth Metro area. Take a drive watch where they are bulldozing the find out who the site belongs to and go for it.

Where there are demolitions going on ( newspapers ) go round and ask. The only permission you need is the owners. When you do collect take as much as is practical of the soil.

At the end of August the Bonsai society of Western Australia. Has an Auction. Cash and carry. I know that there will be some bigger stuff there this year, as we had a nursery clear out.

Collins Street Community Centre Collins Street South Perth. August 30th 7-30 pm you can get there a bit earlier for a look see.

Same address for the monthly meeting which this month 26th July is a workshop. Members bring trees to be helped with and work on, with help from more experienced members.

just to add to what pup has said, when and if you do dig, take what you have sought but try and leave as little a foot print as possible, if you have seeked owners permission and you leave where you dug as it was or similar you will most likely be able to go back. if digging on properties of course.

also try find creeks you will usually find a certain species growing in abundance there, if you go country driving you will most likely find a creek or drainway that will have a good selection from, especially near livestick paddocks. where we went digging up here last year on the sunny coast dig, we stopped at one place which was a crook/drainway near a farm fence and i collected 3 trees, bundyfisher got 2-3 and dayne got a corker privet! and that was in about an hour, if i had more space in the car at the time i would of filled my car!

Thanks for the answers. Yeah that's kind of what i thought, I'll have to go for a few drives and see what's around.

Also the Bonsai Society's auction sounds like a winner.

Heading up to Mundaring this weekend for some mountain biking so i'll keep my eyes peeled up that way. I'm sure i've seen some big pines along Great Eastern that i can rummage around under

There are a lot of Leptospermum laevigatum up there ( coastal tee trees) I am sure there are quite a few radiatas around too.
