Cool Monster that may not live. What is it anyway?

Hi, I just dig this guy up today as my bro in-law wanted to throw it out. Don't know how old it is but the stump looks massive for this type of plants. The problem is it was between the concrete slabs so I had to chop most of the roots to get it out. Doesn't look very promising about it coming back. It has very hard wood so there will be a good opportunity for carving to make jins (if it lives). Would be much appreciated if you could provide an ID.

it does look similar to callistemon DK, that is a monster stump, i would be pretty confident in saying you should be ok with it as there will be a lot of stored energy in those roots!

Looks like a Grevillia for sure. The bark is wrong for Callistemon. If it is a Grevillia, it could be one of many species, or hundreds of cultivars and hybrids. You will probably never know for sure. That would tell you it was is the Proteaceae family, in which case it is most likely a Grevillia.

Thanks Joel and Glenn. I think it is Grevillea by the look of some goolge images And Joel, I didn't have a chance to see any fine roots as most of them got chopped off near the trunk. The flower from goole images suggest that it could be Grevillea Banksii. How good is this species for bonsai? is it hardy enough to survive this hard transplant?

I'll change my guess. After enlarging a pic, it is a Grevillea (something starting with J off my head). Def not a Callistemon.

Were you thinking G. juniperina? That was one of my first thoughts....

Right on the Money, Joel! Very common plant to about 4m hight. sharp leaves etc.

Gday Josh,
I still reckon Banskii or similar, Juniperina has more needle like leaves.
I have an old prostrate Banksii that during dry times shrinks the leaves and flowers looking very similar to this one.

G. rosmarinifolia has sharper leaves. G. juniperina has the foliage that looks more like rosemary. I think they somehow named them the wrong way around!
