Swamp Cypress help

Hi all first time poster.

This image is now a few year old, the tree has developed somewhat, but the structure remains as is.




My concerns are;

is it to tall
how to deal with the vertical growth from the earlier cut
would it be improved with shorter braches

welcome to the forum firstly you will find a great deal of info and help here

i dont think your tree is to tall, it looks taller with the short branches, you could probably take it back down and regrow the tree to give it more of a ration but i reckon it is in keeping with a full sized tree in nature except the buttressing that is normally seen on them, that does take a very long time to get that in a bonsai pot.

Thicken the trunk up as quickly as possible. Wire or hold down the lower branches to help thicken.

OK, I've a couple of these trees and had them for over 10 years. They do need to fatten up when starting from young stock. I have been growing them in a plastic orchid pot and then placing the pot in shallow water tray during the growing season. No point having them in water during the dormant period but as soon as the tree starts to wake up, then back in the water again. They will grow well with blood and bone in the potting mix and added dynamic lifter on the surface. Let the tree grow wild and establish a good basic framework of strong branches and as Grant says, either wire them or tie them to a descending angle. The roots will start to escape from the holes in the pot and into the water tray. These can be trimmed a couple of times a year. The trunk will expand quickly and develop and a good flare should be obtained as the nebari develops.
