Japanese grey bark elm. The three trees date from 1951. They were trained as bonsai separately and assembled as a group in 2002. The age of these elms is evident in the heavy trunks and especially in their broad bases. Note that two of the trees are growing upright, while the third is slanting. This agrees with the Japanese bonsai principles, according to which symmetry does not occur in nature and therefore should not in bonsai either (unless there is a special reason). Also, there are usually odd numbers only in groups of trees, pairs excepted.

this is a very nice group, the trees grown seperatly first is definately a way to go! the bases are great and the slanting tree is what binds the image together.

Amazing how, even though grown separately they still mimic the exact same slant. Keen eye.
Lovely setting.

Regards, Mitchell.

They really have come along way since the collection got them.
I remember helping clean this group up before the collection was opened and there has been a great transformation from what the NBPCA received.
Great job guys, they are looking great!
Are there any plans to 'clean up' some of the roots on the small tree?

The roots on all the trees are "very interesting!" if you know what I mean.Scott Roxburgh wrote:They really have come along way since the collection got them.

nice trees-The composition seems very even in the pot and the major apexes too similar. I would like to see them in a slightly larger pot and the group moved to the right a little-with the left hand tree potted deeper (or the two others lifted a little) to give more height variation--yes?--no?

The only plans I have to change this setting is for the apex on the largest tree(far right) to be allowed to grow taller than the tree on the far left; to accentuate the diiference of thickness and dominance of the right over the left. (Sounds like politics!)Guy wrote:nice trees-The composition seems very even in the pot and the major apexes too similar. while i was looking at this group in the 360 i noticed an angle that would make this group a stunning windswept looking group, unfortunatly i dont know how to save he angle i seen to put it up. ??
it still looks great though
edit- figured it out

just another option possibly down the track, but i also beleive if it aint broke dont fix it
