Wisteria from E.S

I received this wisteria as part of a trade with Edward Scissorhands. A beautiful trunk line and basic branch structure but in need of a good haircut and repot. For me the tree is made by its beautiful tangle of surface roots showing its many years of life as a bonsai. I have limited myself to bending the first 2 branches out, i couldnt make a decision about the top half so have left it for now. On closer inspection there is some rot about the central parts of the trunk but for now I am content to let it be as its not major.

is this variety one with long racemes? or the shorter ones? you know what colour it is?

I think it is Wisteria sinensis, which has the shorter racemes and higher perfume.

I am pretty sure Eddie said that it was a purple. We will find out for sure when and if it flowers.

I really love Wisteria season, seeing all the vines in peoples gardens covered in flowers ansd especially love bonsai Wisteria. Having said that, I wont be letting this or any of my wisteria flower this year, rather than expending energy on flowers i would rathey they all put it into growth and ramification. None of mine come even close to Bodhi's beauty viewtopic.php?f=132&t=2561&hilit=wisteria If I concentrate on growth for a few years then maybe we can think about flowers

With getting shade up for summer & re-arranging my trees, this wisteria was moved to the end of a bench next to one of the posts. In less than 1wk it had already started to grab hold of them & as of last night the first runner hit the roof! Growth at the start of the season was very slow but has gathered pace as we roll along. It has been sitting on a water tray since mid nov, the only tree in my collection with one.

I want to let this tree grow as much as it likes this year to rebuild some strength in it. I would also like to try and encourage some of the many backbuds that have appeared all over the trunk & branchs. Can I defoliate the lower parts to let more light into the branchs but leave the runners alone? Or do I really have to prune to encourage them? This is something i have never done with wisteria nor have I ever read of it anywhere (then again I may have skipped that bit) so if anyone here has any experience or can offer another idea to get those extra buds moving would be great.
