lindsays collection is amazing, that cascade pot in the second pic is something else! that is a sensational pot, i wouldnt even dream of putting a tree in that!

G'day all

For some time now I have been following the posts regarding Jamie’s Cultural Revolution pot. Initially when Jamie was asked where he bought the pot from he stated that he had got it from me. I actually gave Jamie the tree and pot, as I knew he was a keen bonsai enthusiast but with limited finances. I was not aware that the pot was a valuable collectible, and certainly had I known would not have given it away with the tree. I have been quite generous also in selling Jamie plants at a considerably reduced price, as I felt he was deserving of the support.

However, I have to say that I feel he would have shown more ethical principles by contacting me about the pot immediately he discovered its possible value. I would certainly not request that he return the pot, as I had given it to him in good faith. However, I really feel quite disappointed that Jamie has been quite vocal in establishing the rarity and value of the pot. Perhaps it may have been better for him to have contacted me and offered to return the pot. I would most likely have refused his offer to return the pot. I do feel that this would certainly have been a much more gracious action for him to have taken. Perhaps Jamie could enlighten me on what he hopes to achieve by his posts?

i stupidly didnt think at all when i found out about the pot. it will be coming back to you.. i dont want it to ruin a friendship, although i feel like it has... the post wasnt about bragging rights or anything like that. it was about showing these pots are around and about others interests in them as well..

i dont know what else i can say.. i have PM'd you and have put this up to show my sincerest thoughts. your response has affected me deeply Rod and i dont know how i can make it up to you. like i said it wasnt about brag rights and i should have contacted you first about this..

No worries Jamie. It had been worrying me and I just felt I needed to say something. Through my years of bonsai I have been given many pots, and I did not know the origin of this pot. It was disappointing for me to find out about the pot online rather than personally. Like I said in my pm, the tree was given to you in good faith and the pot is yours to do with what you wish. No hard feelings.

I am kind of surprised the chinese made pots during the cultural revolution since all things artistic were so frowned on or destroyed during this period.

I don't think they were high quality and therefore not of high value; just interesting.

hi grant,

im not sure of the value of them as of the minute, some of the CR pottery was of a rather high quality, maybe not all the bonsai pots but some vases and porcelein is very nice.

as i said before it wasnt the value of the pots that i am interested in, it is the actual pottery and patina, it is different which i like and have become interested in, john (dumper) has got me scrounging through second hand shops and the net..

I beleive from what i have seen and read so far that there were some pottery and clay workshops that were still doing it in secret. im not 100% sure though, i did see a movie that was a true story about the cultural revolution and it looked like it was a very sad time for the country.

Here are a couple of Mrs Pups pots. Not sure if they are cultural revolution some are Japanese early Palm Pots.

The little round green pot was spied by Lindsay on his visit. He then enlightened me that it was Coal fired which has now been banned in China so it will gain in value.
The cascade pot with the sack top was found in a flea market in the UK pointed out by Peter Chan, cost a pound.

The tan cascade pot came to us via a job lot sale as did the small one with the painting, the detail is amazing on something this small.

The Palm pots were traded for other things and some money

Hi Grant I think sad is an understatement. They killed or persecuted most of their intellectuals and destroyed so many historical monuments and artworks it was a huge tragedy for china.

I wish I did have some of these cultural revolution pots, it was a remarkable time in history when things of that nature took place.
Comes from communism I guess.
I don't know where you guys find these pots I have been looking for quite some time I think they are wonderful and as some of the other pictures show, just used for ornamental decoration they are great.
I can see why people hang onto these particular pots.

Dumper, that's a damn fine celadon right there, nice lines, beautiful crackle, and not too luridly green or blue - very refined indeed. Could you post a photo when you put a tree in it? Celadons are not easy to balance with a tree, because of the competing greens.

i dont think that crackle pot is a celadon pot. it's like a matt white glaze. the celadon pot is more jade like glazed rite?
im might be wrong.
I'll put a tree in when i find one that suit it.
