BROOM STYLE CHINESE ELM

HI EVERYONE, THIS IS ONE OF MY TREES, IT'S A CHINESE ELM THAT I GOT FROM A NURSERY.IT STOOD ABOUT 2.5-3M HIGH,.I DECIDED TO CUT IT DOWN TO AROUND 150MM IN THE V SHAPE AND GREW NEW LEADERS AND BRANCHES FROM THERE.ORIGINALLY CUT DOWN IN ABOUT 1993,IT'S NOW ABOUT 300MM HIGH AND 300MM WIDE. AS YOU CAN SEE I HAVE CARVED THE TRUNK OUT A BIT TO RESEMBLE A HOLLOW TRUNK(sabamiki)STYLE,.THE LAST FEW YEARS IT'S BEEN A RATHER SMALL BONSAI POTS BUT THIS YEAR I HAVE PUT IT INTO A LARGER PLANT POT TO ALLOW A BIT MORE VIGOUROUS GROWTH(trunk thickening etc)...let me know what you think,,,,,,,,CHEERS CRAIG
** Hi all, i've just noticed that when i started this topic i stated that i cut this tree down in 1993,,Actually i wasn't doing bonsai in 93, sothats incorrect information..In actual fact the tree was cut down in about 2002/2003, so has only been trained for the past 7years not 16yrs like i originally said..Sorry about posting the wrong info, Craig

I like this elm, it has a great feel to it and the carving works with it your ramification is coming up nicely, could you get a shot from above the tree so we can see the profile when ya get the chance ofcourse

THANKS JAMIE,I STILL WANT TO CARVE A BIT MORE AND THE BRANCHES ARE STARTING TO COME ALONG NICELY,, IT'S LOSING IT'S LEAVES AND READY TO PUT OUT THIS SEASONS NEW GROWTH IN THE COMING DAYS,,,,HERES A COUPLE OF PIC AS REQUESTED,,, CHEERS CRAIG

thanks for the pics! the branching is definately coming along well, looks very natural, i take it you did mostly clip and grow? the birdseye view is great to, i have heard that is one of the harder things to accomplish with a broom style. it makes me want to kick my celtis in the bum and start pumping its growth out!

YEAH JAMIE I PRETTY MUCH CLIP AND GROW ON THIS TREE, NO WIRE REALLY NEEDED.I TRY NOT TO HAVE TOO MANY BRANCHES CROSSING EACH OTHERS PATHS,THINGS LIKE THAT,ITS JUST A MATTER OF TIME TILL YOU GET A BRANCH WHERE YOU NEED/WANT IT. THIS ELM IS ARE PRETTY EASY TO LOOK AFTER AND I JUST LOVE IT .THERE SOME THINGS I'M NOT HAPPY WITH BUT I'M WORKING ON THAT,,,CHEERS CRAIG

Hi Craig , that is a very nice looking Elm . I have one done from a root cutting ,it was taken off my big elm when collected. The root was 40mm at the time and had a large bulbus section where it had grown up against a rock in the garden and no real taper .I like the simplicity of the leaders ,mine has too many , a large carved section as you have done would help balance it . I might pop it up for a critique/restyle one day . Thanks for posting .Cheers Alpine
