thanks for the idea brett however i cant really see the trunk line working in any other way really, show me a virt so i can see what your getting, robert is a great artist, however i beleive informals can leave pependicular to the soil line, must be a personal taste thing , not visible in the pic unless you look closely the movement actually starts of to the right before going left then arcs back right heavily for the first major turn to the left if that makes sense

i agree making it tilt more will make it quite difficult to work with the problem is with trees like this with such extreme U turns that they dominate what way you can work on them, it can be quite severe at times. you have done a good job jarryd i like the top, and the start of the trunk it is moving nice and subtle.

i dont think there is much you can do with the U turns in the trunk, carving and shari will help a bit, the only other thing i could think of would be to get some dead wood shards carve them into a jin and attach it via glue or screw. bodhi put a post up on that a while ago to add age to a tree quickly (i think it was bodhi) and i think that was the name of the post to, adding age to a tree quickly

i think as the tree develops and it starts to get a better nebari exsposed it wont look like its jutting out straight up as your i will spread wider you could even run the shari down the roots a litle to the left but i love

I've got a similar squamata with corkscrew trunk, just dieing for this treatment.
Would love to see what yours looks like after the last couple of months.

sorry for the late reply on the update mitchell,

i think i may have found a new angle for the trunk and am planning a total restyle for this problem tree.

anyway here is a current picture of the tree. it has just been left to fill out with the occasional pinch back. might start doing some work this evening or maybe tomorrow.

So i am about a third of the way through the restyle,

deadwood and trunk have been cleaned, foliage has also been thinned and primary branches selected/removed. old branches have been turned into jin and the shari has finally been attached the whole way through the trunk. small amounts of sidiao carving have also been done upon branching and trunk.

the new angle has been marked.
