[SELL] Podocarpus - air layer oppurtunity 2 in 1

hi guys,

here is a podocarpus that i was developing for myself and had an air layer planned to use the bottom left branch as a leader which is powering on. the base of this one has a very nice even flair around the tree that is only going to get better as it develops as it will pull the lower trunk out creating an excellent flair. with the top sectioned layered the new root system will do the same as the base in the sense it will pull out. it also has a lovely aged bark not dissimilar to swamp cypress mature bark.

as you can see there are new buds to use as sacrifices down low, the nice flair like i said, the nice bark, and the picture of the leaves opening up from buds that are all over the tree.

they say podocarpus are slow to thicken, i have to disagree as this one has put on a fair bit of girth over the past 2 years i have had it. at least an extra 12-15mm across the trunk.

flair - 40mm
trunk above flair - 30mm
height - 300mm

(these are approx. sizes but very close)

Hi Jamie, podocarpus is quite a large genus so I guess their growth rate would vary according to species. Do you know which species your is ? Would be good to identify the ones which thicken quickly.

hi craig,

I cant be 100% sure but i beleive this one is podocarpus elatus. as for the growth rates it could be the fact it is up here and has near all year growing conditions. I know i will regret selling this one as the flair on it is going to make it a great little shohin size tree in not to long and the top will end up similar. what i have found is that they strike very well from cuttings, so far i reckon i have had about an 80% strike rate from soft and hard wood.
