Amur Maple - Acer ginnala Flame

Post by kvan64 »

I traded for this bare rooted maple last month. Apart from the heavy trimming that needs to be done, I'd like to know if:
1- it is too late to do the tooth pick root work( don't want to distube the roots again too soon)?
2- it is ok to leave the flowers on (The flowers shot out with the new set of leaves - they smell so good!)
3- what feeding regime you would suggest for this species?
4- any styling ideas?
Thanks heaps for your inputs.
DK

G'day DK, the lower trunk of your tree is beautiful then after the first curve it moves into a very straight section with no taper, I think that need to be rectified. I would save any further root work until next winter if the tree has come into full leaf then its too late to work the roots any further. You might as well enjoy the flowers although they are at the expense of leaf growth but won't last long, don't let it set seed though. Just feed it like any oter tree in your collection.

Thanks Craig and Antt. I will probably airlay the top part of that straight branch at some stage to encourage back budding for a new leader.
