English Elms: The right place at the right time

Post by Mojo Moyogi »

Hi Ladies and Gents,
I have been digging my English Elms today and thought that I should post some pics.
Field grown English Elms August 2010.jpg
The largest trunk in the middle of the picture is about 5 inches thick.
I originally obtained these trees in September 2007 from a commercial nursery about 20km from my place, they had been beaten up by a frost and -4 degree temperatures and as a result were useless as nursery trees. So I scored about 100 of them from the chuck out pile for a slab of beer :D :P ;) filled up an 8x5 cage trailer and brought them home. I put 20 of them into styro boxes right away and the rest were put into a temporary bed. When we moved to the farm in March 2008, I dug the trees up and planted them in the ground at the new place.

I decided that it was time to dig them up again this year and get them into proper training. For nursery trees they have decent bases, the plan is to be brutal and remove the lower root systems and get them into manageable containers and chop the trunks down. All of which could of been done 3 years ago, I know  .

Being nursery trees the trunks are fairly straight, but there is a little bit of movement in most of them. The really straight ones with nice bases will be developed into brooms. I have noticed that the 20 that were placed in styros have relatively small leaves for Ulmus procera and nice butter yellow autumn colour, hopefully these will be the same. I plan to do a few progressions on some of these over the next few years.

Watch this space.

Cheers,
Mojo

Looking good mate, did they put on much girth when you were growing them?

Not much Jarrod, maybe 20%, they were fairly congested where they were planted and were not fed much. They did put out a lot of secondary roots. I was just looking to tuck them away for a while and keep them alive until I made an appointment for them with the saw :D.

Cheers,
Mojo

nice mojo!!! :D

I am a fan of the old english elms! have one or two i am working on, they are in the ground at the minute for a year or more at least!

Im interested on how small the leaves on these ones in the boxes were mate, the english elm i have (well beleive it to be english, possibly siberian) has tiny leaves, im talking no longer than 10mm.

good stuff man :D a slab for an 8 x5 cage trailer full, score!

Hi Jamie,
The leaves were down to about 20-25mm last year. 10mm sounds very small for an English Elm.

Hey the slab was good Victorian Beer, not that QLD stuff :D , you would have been looking at 3 slabs to seal the deal I reckon

Cheers,
Mojo

hmmm, lucky I dont drink queenslandian beer, actually dont drink any beer these days, sober for 4 years or so now! :D but when i did have a few drinks it was either my mate Jim or Jack, and when it was the amber fluid, it was Tooheys extra dry :D

still a good price at 3 slabs

Thats about 4 cans of Kilkenny or a tot of Chivers. I would have been willing a few years ago.

Ahh Kilkenny, they had that on tap at my old local, I confess that I have consumed many big creamy pints of the stuff. A fine drop.
