Nebari Overkill....Is there such a concept??...I don't find it as attractive as the traditional form of nebari. What do you guys think?
No doubt an exceptional amount of time and skill has gone into this, so it's not to say I don't appreciate it.
Cheers!!

I am also of the opinion this is too false looking. While I do appreciate the work involved in getting it where it is. I also believe you have to see the whole picture.
As in the whole tree to really appreciate it.

IN THE LIGHT OF KNOWLEDGE ATTAINED, ACHIEVEMENT IS WITHIN SIGHT
I agree. A significant aspect of Bonsai is the element of perspective, so maybe it was unfair not to post the whole tree. You asked for it....so here it is. I still think it looks too contrived/odd.
Cheers!

Next time I dog walk in Sydney Park I can get a photo of a fig that has a wonderful circumference of nebari but they are roots, not a solid mass. I do agree the tree is stunning but the nebari looks like one of the metal stands for large umbrellas. Yes, there is such a thing as overkill and it has been well and truly achieved here. At least you wouldn't have to worry about moss growing up the trunk...it would never have the stamina to reach it.
It's too bad your in such a hurry cause the stories I could tell you, Bushels and baskets of stories, hole crates full of stories. But if you can spare a moment I will tell you one story.
I am not overly fond of this nebari however it does show the years it has been growing as a bonsai.
I too would have said it was unnatural if I hadnt seen some of the water gums that have been planted as street tree's in Sydney. While not on the same scale, given another hundred years or so they will be getting up there. The trunks were approx 2' in dia with a fused nebari like on this Zelkova that was close to the same. The nebari spread from the curb to the footpath and had started pushing on both!
