Yeah i would say get a good radial spread and stop thinning out just keep flattening out and bring the length back. It will soon fuse and bob's not you're uncle! Still not my cup of tea. BTW that first acer is no pinnacle, it needs to be shortened and taper reintroduced!

I disagree Ant, I think that is the pinacle and our difference of opinion on this matter is one of the best things about bonsai. Otherwise we would all have the same trees!

I think with very old palmatum bonsai taper is not such a huge issue, the root base, the beautifully curved trunkline and the outstanding ramification are the elements which make this tree outstanding. a tree like this would have been cultivated in a bonsai pot for at least 70 years, to my eye this is the absolute essence of palmatum bonsai.
