Acacia Howittii - NBPCA

What area is Acacia Howittii native to? I've noticed some roadside large shrubs/small trees south of Michelago and wondered if they were this species.

I presume since it is in the National Collection that it is frost hardy, or is it housed in a more protected area in winter?

Seeing the beautiful examples of this plant in the National Collection and in the recent AusBonsai comp has certainly sparked my interest in them.

At the moment the Acacia sits in a sunny protected corner at the NBPCA and is protected from frost. As you can see it grows vigorously and is a great sublect for bonsai.

Time will tell how long they live as bonsai but as we can repair any damage from insects etc and given good care they should live indefinately.

Is there any other Acacia Howittii other than this one ? I bought one recently to bonsai but was told it was not the correct one, it's common name is Honey Bun but the lable also said Acacia Howittii, Can someone please advise?

There is a prostrate form that is used.

There is also an upright tree which is not used; so you need the prostrate form.

I have both actually. The weeping form I have posted before and I also have one of the upright forms as well. Its leaves are the same small ones so might be OK as an upright tree. It seems grow and need the same care as the usual one

There are also cultivars of the Howittii Prostrate, "green mist" and also" green wave". I have quite a few green waves i am developing but as yet no flowers. Do you know the cultivar of this one and must they be a certain age to flower Also , they are a bit of a bugger to strike from cuttings, in my experience anyway.

If there are so many of the Howitii cultivars would any of them be successful being grown in the tropics (ie:
townsville)
