shohin privet X 2

Post by Jamie »

hi guys,

after putting a cople of pics up on dumpers shohin thread i thought it to be a good idea to give the privet there own thread. These two privet are from a trade with MattA. I hadnt had access to privet and found them interesting for a long time, Harry Harringtons privet have always been an inspiration to me, especially his privet which i would call his trademark tree, I asked Matt if he had something similar and he come up with the goods :D

privet one is a trunk that i chose as it reminded me of harry harringtons, i have gotten rid of all the dead, rotten wood, the deadwood still needs some refinement carving and also some treatment.

privet 2 is a little one that i am intending on growing into a little broom style tree, i need to do a lot more carving and refinement and treatment on it, but i reckon it should come up nice too. I am going to try and keep to the style of the sketch as much as possible, highly ramified.

Nice plans jamie. Very much achievable. All we need is time. Very nice stocks you have there too mate.

Hey Jamie,

Looking good there bud. That first clump is going to be real nice in no time at all. Wondered when we would all get to see what you have done with them, keep it up.

Bloody Privet!!!!

Mate, got yourself some nice stock there. As for them not growing quick enough, I reckon you should just about realise you vision for both of them by 5pm today!!!!

I remember doing a Workshop with Lindsay B once and someone had a nice privet there to work on which Lindsay refused to call it Bonsai. He reckon Bonsai is something that you have to work on to get to grow and style, not something you had to work on to stop growing

hi guys :D

cheers for the compliments :D

 graeme, i can see where Lindsay is coming from when he said that, if privet are anything like the clero then i will be really happy  ;)

maybe i shouldnt feed the privet like i do the rest of my trees...just to slow them down enough to be able to call them bonsai

Took a bit of hunting to find that stock for you bud, but is well worth it to see how far they will go with you. Clumps are most common round here, finding a single trunk tree is the oddity. I want to explore some of the bigger clumps soon to maybe find a nice raft. Yours due to it isolated spot had a pretty good nebari compared to what is usual.

One of the local club members is almost always found to be working with a privet at meetings. He gets the most amazing tiny foliage on them & everyone asks him how, he told me one time... All I do is not feed it and not water it and they are fantastic. Tiny foliage & the growth is minimal so its no issue with keeping them trim.

Really like your vision for the clump, it will be something special in a few short years. I am seeing my jagged lines in that main bit of clero you have sent & looking forward to getting them in the ground and trying a few things. Wont get the explosive growth rates you do up north but reckon I can still work something half acceptable to my eye in a couple of years. I dont mind waiting 20+yrs to see some come to fruition but its nice to have some faster movers. Am moving into smaller trees now I have more time to tend them again, forgotten how much fun they could be. Making small pots for my own tree's now that opens up lots of ideas. Dont worry there is one that has your name on it ;)

gday matt :D

your efforts in finding them have been greatly appreciated and hopefully i can do them justice ;)

the clero is gonna be a great little shohin, in the ground i would expect the jagged lines to round off in a year, maybe two, then development for a shohin tree wouldnt be a great deal longer, unless you are after a bigger tree, which obviously will require some extra time ;) i know you have the patience though :D

interesting info on the privet, feed and water for good growth, stop when you want it to slow down, to simple! Love trees like that :D

will keep ya all updated as these puppies move along!

great work finding the tree within jamie on both of these, you will have some great trees in no time.

It bugs me when people bag out privet for bonsai, i love working with privets, they are very rewarding in no time at all and make great bonsai. i have an endless supply of them here  the nebari on some of them are spectacular. the fact that they grow fast is a bonus not something to be frowned upon in the bosai world.

may even go hunting for yamadori tomorow after seeing this thread.

cheers champ!

your rubbing it in going digging tomorrow arent ya  not just the privet but diggin in general! you will have to show us what you come home with ;)

i can see where ya coming with on people bagging out privet being such fast growing species, you could also say that using clerodenrum is "cheating" to consider they power on and make great trees in no time, they are called indian privet though too ;)

good luck tomorrow :D

hi guys, just a little update :D

both have had some good strong extension growth, around 6 inches average on each shoot in 16 days :D very happy with that, so a little extra wire and removal of a couple of shoots i killed off accidently and we are now here :D branch thickening is the main thing right now, have got the movement in them ever exagerated so when they thicken it will still be there, more than likely i will thicken then cut back hard to develop the branching properly :D

hi guys :D

decided to have a bit of me time this arvo, looking at these two little privet and thinking to myself they look a little "messy" so they got brought in to my little work area and I got into them, selecting new shoots, a little fine wiring, extension wiring aswell, impressed with the extension growth on these things! starting to take a little more shape over the past couple of weeks, and will come up a treat in the not to distant future :D
privet 1Y.jpg
the first, clump style, I still need to do a little carving which i think needs to get done sooner rather than later when it will become awkward. need to treat them aswell.
privet 2Y.jpg
this one needs another branch low on the left side, there is one coming from the back but I think i can get another one to pop in the right place, I reckon if I just leave it for a couple of weeks one will apear!

feel free to comment, offer advice etc :D
