has anyone had any success with hawthorn cuttings? i read on a few sites that hawthorn are quite difficult to strike from cuttings and that most are propagated by seeds.
i hvae two crimson double petalled hawthorn that are grafted. they are in the garden and i have taken numerous cuttings from them. they were taken a few weeks ago, hardwood cuttings prior to bud swell.
any ideas on hwo to increase the strike rate?

Re: hawthorn cuttings
Maybe rooting hormone. Antt once mentioned about keeping them well moist.

Re: hawthorn cuttings
hi mate,
using a rooting hormone should help, use the powder mixed with a touch of water to make a paste, it seems to stay on longer then the gel, wet your medium that you are using before putting the cuttings in, that will give the paste a little extra time, if you can provide bottom heat it is always good, if you have a little hot house that will keep hte humidity up will help greatly too.
I have managed to strike some smaller hawthorn cuttings, upto around 10mm so far. so it can be done!
keep us posted mate
I am pretty sure the red hawthorn are a little rarer here? moreso being the whites, I am sure someone could clarify that.
