[SOLD] Young TAXODIUM [Swamp Cypress]

Post by MelaQuin »

Swamp Cypress in the early stages. It has already thickened quickly over the past year but what I am doing is developing a flared nebari instead of the usual knob of interconnected roots that is a natural growth habit. There are 5 radiating roots, the one at 11 o'clock is still developing and was uncovered for the photo. The shallow tray promotes the spread of the roots out rather than down. The tree was repotted in July and is just starting to burst into bud. At this stage it is not overly special but has nice movement for an informal upright, branch shaping started and the flared nebari.

Mate I can't lift this now and it isn't 'big'. Look at my next post '[Saotome]. I'm heading down. 87 trees was just too many - about 50 will be fine and I now only have about 5 that are troublesome for me to lift. Those will eventually have to be sold but I'm not ready to part with them yet. But definitely not getting out of bonsai. Gives me too much pleasure on a daily basis.

Stupid question - have you thought of using a diatomite or perlite-based mix? They seem to be a lot lighter.

Just thinking.

I use it but the tree sits in water so the soil is saturated and once it gets a couple more years growth it is going to be even bigger, stronger and heavier. I can't do it. I knew when I bought it that I shouldn't have but I had an idea that seemed a good proposition at the time. Whoever buys it, whether here or at the BSA show next week, they are going to get a good tree with a good start in development. And the weight won't be the problem it is for me.

Wow, that's a good price IMO :) It looks to be a decent size and to have some development done already! You'll pay that price at a nursery for a smaller, undeveloped one.
Someone local should buy this!!

Wish someone in Sydney would see it as a bargain and buy it. I got it at Bonsai South early last year for $25, it has had major root work and design done and has thickened considerably since then so it is very good value.
