common ash

Post by cartzo »

hi guys, this is my first post on this forum, i've been looking through other forums and all over the internet for information on this species but all to no avail. So i thought perhaps i'd try here. i recently acquired a common ash that i have wired and is ready for ramification next season, however i have no information on the best techniques for building up branches and defoliation. does anyone on this forum have any experience with this species.
pictures here.

by the way the branch to the left of the apex snapped whilst i was wiring it, unfortunately leaving that small void you can see.

G'day Cartzo, Ash are quite a popular species here in Australia due to the fact that they are a significant weed tree. Your climate may present a shorter growing season than ours but here we can defoliate twice over the growing season. The leaf stems are also cut back to the first pair of leaflets on each stem and tip pinching needs to be done regularly over the growing season. They need a very open free draining potting mix and can be fed pretty heavily so long as you are prepared to do the foliage work.
