Is it alive? I think it would be hard to ID it if we can't see the leaves....

At first glance I thought it was a beech (fagus) because dead leaves remain on the tree until new growth comes, but the buds don't look like beech. You might need to wait for new foliage before you can get an ID
Q: Why are we all here?
A: Because we are not all there.

Hornbeams also hang on to there leaves. But the photos are not clear enough for a positive.

hi mate :D

the trunks bark looks a little dehydrated, have you done a scratch test?

as for beech I was under the impression they had a serrated leaf, fine like an elm. by the colour of the bark could this possibly be a stewartia? it looks very similar in habit to them aswell ?

jamie :D

It actually looks somewhat how my Murraya's look like when they are committing suicide.

Seriously I think it may be a Murraya Paniculata.
