teeny tiny display table - just for fun

Hey everyone,
I thought I'd just share some photos of a small little display table enjoyed making for a friend. They had a really small jade in a thumbnail size pot (the same size pot in the photo) and for a little thank you present, I carved this little fella for them to set the jade on (I don't have a photo of the table with the tree though). It's made of aussie red cedar and i just used my dremel and a few of the smallest carving tips. I used some really fine sandpaper (1200 grit) for the top, and a bit of oil to get the deep red colouring.

It's hard holding onto something so small with the dremel wanting to flick it away at 100k's an hour. It flicked out of my fingers at one point, and i had to go looking for it amongst all my work bench untidy mess.

Anyway, it was a fun little weeknight project. It's great going to alot of effort for such small things. Which I guess is one of the best aspects of bonsai.

Ahoy kas! You're finally a member of the good ol ausbonsai! Welcome old friend.

And yeah, maybe it's a bit of ad/hd coming out, I get in a spell and can focus without even trying sometimes, as long as it's fun of course. And yep, i've had that dremel for like 12 years now, it's helped many a dream come alive. ha!

I'm glad ya liked it MattA, ahhh and those are your little pots that i've been seeing?! (i'm newish posting here, so i'm getting to know the users). Nice work. That's something i'm dying to try, to try my hand at making my own pots. I think I could lose hours and hours in that fun. I think from memory, this little fella took around 1 1/2 - 2 hrs to make. So not too crazy long. I haven't made any more since I made this one, but my summer holidays might spawn some creative holiday free time to whip up some more. So if i do pick up my dremel for that, I might give you a yell to see if you'd like to have some made?

Ahh, well who knows, I might just feel like making some more around december time, once I finish off some other home projects. oooh, the sales of them could go towards buying my first dslr camera, which I then could take awesome photos of my bonsai with, so it all comes full circle. You wouldn't pay $1500 for one would you? Ha!

Nice one, it'd be funny if the aussie post clerk said "um this is so light, it's free to send". If only. I'll hopefully get a shot of it with it's own bonsai, and of course more when I make them.

Sheez Jozaeh I was gonna ask for 4 but at $ 1500-00 I think I had better cut back. Very nice. I would really love some as I do have some tree's that size in need of display stands.

Matt when you display mini pots you need a mini rack stand, Lee's Bonsai World here in the West have them. If Jozaeh does not mind I will post one here.

I spent half of today walking around Bunnings and my other half had to spend a good portion of that time in the electric tools section. Then I spotted this weee little tool, dragged him over, asking a millions questions coz' I was so intrigued! Guess what, it was a Dremel! What are the odds, like I've never heard of it before today!

He ended up buying me a cheaper version, an "Ozito" with case with so many bits & pieces. I've been wondering how on earth I was going to put it to good use! What a shame you're so far away, I could have been your apprentice!


You have got to make a few more AND put up the photos for our viewing pleasure & envy! Please!!

A very nice stand. From the interest they are not "just for fun".
As you do not have a club and this thread seems to have a very BrisVagas following,
the Bimer Bonsai Club will met this Saturday in the Church Hall in Safari St West Chermside.
First Saturday of each month, starting about 12.30. Demo or talk start at 1.30pm.
Non member and member, bonsai tragics are welcome.
Michael will present a talk on tree roots and Bruce will show some artifacts and photos of the recent BCI China tour. A free cup of tea and a chance to see some nice local trees.

I thought people might like the little table, but I didn't expect the enthusiasm you gave in YOUR reply! ha ha! I love it! I will eventually make a few more and when I do, they'll be shared for sure, of course with trees on display to boot.

That's so funny about hearing of dremels just today! Dremel is the mega marketed brand, so you pay ALOT for their bits and pieces. But nowadays there are so many great quality rotary tools that are just as good. So congratulations on the new toy! your Ozitio sounds great. And oh boy, if you end up making things with your ozito like i've made with my dremel, then you're in for some fun. I've used mine to carve wooden rings, polish things, carve deadwood in my trees, carve and grind lava rock for a root over rock planting, engraving, making little chess pieces, carving long wooden smoking pipes, etc. And wood is it's best friend because you can do such intricate details with little wood projects. And yeah, apprenticeships from far away don't work too well. But I'm sure you could reverse engineer one of my little tables with a bit of practice.

One thing, if you're right handed like I am, the anti-clockwise spinning of the tool will be facing you and actually flick pretty much ALL sawdust, pieces of whatever you're carving etc right into your face! So super eye safety is golden. But enough of the tips, go and have fun with it.
