I kept cutting them back and they developed a real carroty, lumpy growth growth.

Im new to bonsai..i'm just curious, when people refer to "cutting them back" to induce trunk growth, do they cut them right back to the trunk or just cut a portion of the branch off?

Hi ya Grant, i think he is talking about the sacrifice branches growing on the trunk. Also if you cut branches back to the second or third growth it induces shooting or backbudding further down the branch. I think there is confusion in his question between the two. Damn, hope that is clear

Hmm,

If you want new growth on the trunk you can cut back to the trunk on nursery stock.

If you want new growth internally on branching you cut back branches hard; not just defoliate.

Today I cut back branches hard to encourage new buds to break further in on the branches; and left some weaker inner buds just defoliated so they would have a head start on the stronger areas.

Balancing of growth is now what it is all about.

Hi all,

Just 14 days after defoliation the tree is doing nicely. a lot of the buds have burst and the tree is tinged with green.

Some buds on strong branches or tips of branches were completely removed. This allows the buds on weaker branches or areas to bud first and the strong buds will be held back as they need to completely reshoot from older wood.

After not even a monthe the Ash is fully back in leaf and I trimmed back some of the stronger growth today; also trimmed some of the compound leave left on the stronger growth as well to reduce vigour.

This should allow the weaker growth time to catch up and pass the stronger growth. I should then defoliate again around mid December' say 10 to 14 days time.

Can't wait to see how more ramified you have gotten it when you next defoliate and how much smaller the leaves will become.
