A very nice stand. From the interest they are not "just for fun".
As you do not have a club and this thread seems to have a very BrisVagas following,
the Bimer Bonsai Club will met this Saturday in the Church Hall in Safari St West Chermside.
First Saturday of each month, starting about 12.30. Demo or talk start at 1.30pm.
Non member and member, bonsai tragics are welcome.
Michael will present a talk on tree roots and Bruce will show some artifacts and photos of the recent BCI China tour. A free cup of tea and a chance to see some nice local trees.
See you there, ask for Bruce.
Hiya Bonsaibruce,
Yeah i'm surprised at the happy interest this stand got hey, so it's made it a little more serious than the 'just for fun', ha!

And wow, thanks so much for the invite to the Bimer Bonsai Club, Chermside isn't that far from me, and I've never been to a demo before, so i've been keen for one for ages. And getting a chance to see other artist's trees is always great. I think i'm busy this saturday, but i'll keep the 1st saturday of each month in mind cause it would be great to attend.

Thanks!

Awesome!

Just a note on working with such small timber carvings, try and leave them attached to the main stock piece of timber till your ready to finish them.

Say for tables like these, take a 50mmx50mm x 30cm piece of timber and carve the bottom legs and belly of the table, so you have a chunk of 50x50 with the complete under side of the table carved on the end. This will allow you to carve, sand and finish the underside of the table all with the chunk of 50x50 held in a vise. Once the underside/legs of the table are finished, simply make one final cut neatly (the top) to separate the table from stock timber.

That is how one holds tiny carvings that can not be clamped in a vise, clamp the excess then cut it off.

Hope that helps a little. :)

No probs. I do enjoy the occasional taste of sawdust. :D

When you get the hang of doing the legs/belly then cutting it off, you can then start to see how you could mark out a 1m piece of timber with say 20 tables, mark drill holes, then drill out excess (between legs) the whole way down for all 20 tables. It would just look like a 50x50 with a lot of holes, but when you work out drill bit size and cut placements you should be able to do many of the arcs underneath in one sitting. Perhaps you could drill the underside of two tables with larger bit legs to legs, top to top.

As you go down the stick and cut them off you merely need to drum sand the underside, instead of trying to sand the full shape/profile of the leg.
Regards, Mitchell.

Ok, for a minute there my brain stalled trying to visualise your description, ha! But after concentrating I think i've got. The length of timber with tables marked out down it is a great idea hey, and alas, i don't have a drum sander, just a good ol cork sanding block and my hands. But maybe a purchase should be on the cards eventually. Thanks again so much for the great ideas Mitchell.

Hey Jozaeh,

I love the stand, but me thinks hubby would not be happy with me buying one at that price! LOL a bit too many 0's for me to lash out and buy one, when I win Lotto I will comission you to make one for me....

Though with the response you have had you may be able to have some more "fun" and maybe make a few dollars towards the camera, just lower the price...

Cheers Nora

Hi Nora!
Ahh, well on a serious price update, i've spoken with a couple other users on the forum here and it looks like i'll be setting aside some time in early december to carve out some more of these tables for them. They take around 1-1/2 hours from start to finish for each table, so they're around $30-$50 each. Which i know seems loony when you look at the finished size of the stand, ha ha!

So if that interests you, feel free to give me a yell anytime and we can choose a wood, style and size that you'd like.

thanks!

MattA wrote:That is just stunning... It would work so well with some of my smallest pots (and I thought they were labour intensive) this stand must have taken ages to make. Got any more? I need some to display my pots on at shows.

Keep up the good work, look forward to seeing other projects you get up to.

Matt
Hey again MattA,
I just wanted to let you know that after some interest from some of the members on here, i'll be making some stands to order in early december. They take around 1 - 1 & 1/2 hrs to make each, so it's $30-$50 per table (depending on each table's intricacy). So if that interests you, then just holler anytime. I can make them specifically to match in size and style to a particular tree of yours, or you can just let me know what size/wood type/style you'd like.

thanks!
