Mesmer Eyes
My Leptospermum "Mesmer Eyes" is in bloom and I thought I'd share it with you. Don't you love the name of this cultivar?! I have had this tea tree for 2 years and I must say that it's the easiest one to grow of the various Leptosmermums I've had so far. It's a pity that it won't be in flower when the next Native Bonsai Show is on.

Re: Mesmer Eyes
Wow!!! Stunning. To be constructive for a minute though, I think the pot does'nt quite do it justice. I would have used the same shape but in a nice light blue glazed pot. It would represent a nice contrast to the pink in the flowers without detracting too much from the tree itself.
Just my 10c worth

Re: Mesmer Eyes
Thank you, Neal and Jester.
A light blue pot, Jester? Hmmm... Have to think about that one. I'd be rather inclined towards a dark blue or a turquoise, but I'll have to see what I can find. The pot that the tree is in was chosen because I needed something deep, as it was the first transplantation from a nursery pot to a bonsai pot and I had cut a fair amount off the rootball. IF you can call that little container a bonsai pot, which I doubt.

Grant, your message popped up just as I wanted to post this one. Hebe G.B. !! Just in case no one comes up with a new Hebe whose beauty would be worthy of you, you could apply for a name change. So long as the H of Hebe doesn't come after your present initials. G.B.H. wouldn't do, would it.

Re: Mesmer Eyes
Very beautiful Lisa. What a wonderful name. It has taken some insight to come up with that one.

Re: Mesmer Eyes
I am assuming "Mesmer Eyes" has nothing to do with the botanical name. If not, can I ask what the full botanical name of this shrub is? Leptospermum.........?
Thanks
John

Re: Mesmer Eyes
Hi John,
Leptospermum 'Mesmer Eyes' is a hybrid between L. deuense, macrocarpa and a dwarf red flowering form of L. scoparium. It reminds me somewhat of L. spectabile, a really nice species from Colo river which also has large flowers, but alternating petal colour too.

Re: Mesmer Eyes
Thanks a lot, Joel! I'm really grateful for that answer, because I was wondering as much as John what the full botanical name was, of this shrub. The label just said "Leptospermum Mesmer Eyes". ....Which makes me realise that, as a matter of fact, we still don't know what adjective to add to "Leptospermum". Was any ever determined?

Re: Mesmer Eyes
Gday LISA..
Joel was right its a, leptospermum scoparium
A selected cultivar of the ever reliable and hardy tea tree.
It requires an open sunny position and tolerates a wide range of soil types.
Its also supposed to be good for hedges and screening..
Prune after flowering to promote new growth..
Ive got a couple here that im growing on as potensia.
Mine are also in full flower and very showy..
Beautiful flowers..
Native bees seem to love em too..

Re: Mesmer Eyes
Hi, I like the pot it is in- lovely combination. I don't think it needs any blue to bring out the flowers, they are already showy enough.
The name is Leptospermum cv. 'Mesmer Eyes'.
Because it has multiple species parents no one species name applies. It is a registered hybrid.
cheers

Re: Mesmer Eyes
hi Lisa
very nice, the flowers are cool too! does anyone get reminded of camellia flowers when they look at these ones? maybe Australia's answer to the camellia, not that camellia doesnt grow well here as it does.
