[SOLVED] Confirmation - Pussy Willow

Post by soda »

Hi

I bought this bonsai from a reputable seller in Melbourne and it was labelled as a Pussy Willow. On searching online I haven't been able to find any similar images and it certainly has never shown any catkins typical of a Pussy Willow. It has however (as shown) suffered branch dieback typical for a Willow.

It has lost its shape since purchase due to 1 brach dieback and another lost to a fall (possum suspect). Both came from the trunk middle (same side) as shown leaving it now tall and singular. I kind of like the current main truck and its height, though I would guess most would now suggest cutting it down hard? Any tips are most welcome.

Both branches lost are now budding hard. There is also some misc. stuff coming from the base that I'm letting go to get some more taper.

Certainly looks like pussy willow. May take some time to mature to produce flowers, etc or may never flower when constantly pruned. Being a willow it will respond well to hard pruning so cut it wherever you want and let it sprout a new top and branches.

Thanks shibui. Ahh so the catkins are flowers, that explains it. Has responded well to pruning (even if non intended), I just need to work out whether I want to cut the main leader down.
